Help with two of the "same" paperweights
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:52:01 AM »
Greetings, a friend recently purchased these two weights and apart from slightly different sizes and the colour, according to the seller are from entirely different makers. Forgive my lack of knowledge but is there a link between Tweedsmuir Glass and John Deacons?
I have included the actual wording on the expired auctions. The pictures are my own.
+John Deacons pedestal paperweight. It has scallops of 'hot' pink around the
base and a froth of glittery bubbles above. Although this is quite a small
weight (almost miniature) is very heavy for its size (400g). Height 6.5cm,
width 6cm, weight 400g, excellent condition.

+Chris Dodds of Tweedsmuir Glass in Scotland. The pedestal is clear glass
and the base of the globe is bright jade green. Above this are two wide
spirals of white sparkly crystals, each inset with a large silvery bubble.
The pedestal has a curved dip in the underside. This paperweight is in
excellent condition and is what I'd describe as "large miniature". It is
VERY heavy for its size. Height 7cm, width 6.5cm, weight 410g.

Now I have held these little beauties in my hot sticky little hands and feature for feature are the same.
Can anyone clarify the difference in attribution, please.
regards from a wet and wild New Zealand. Carol

Chris Dodds was Tweedsmuir Glass. Dodds and Deacons both worked at Selkirk Glass but I don't know that Deacons worked at Tweedsmuir. Deacons is however, much more of a famous PW name than Dodds

Hi

It is possible that JD made one of these, but I do not recall seeing a paperweight in this style from him - I would suspect an inaccurate attribution, and that they are both Tweedsmuir.

Many thanks for your comments and information- makes more sense that both come from one maker- my bet is Tweedsmuir, I will pass this on. regards Carol
