ID Help! Green opaline with painted (spring) flowers
« on: November 29, 2009, 12:21:38 PM »
 For a friend.

Can anybody help with the identification? The glass is light green opaline
The design seems to be decalled to a 'high'quality but it's been in the family since before 1940.

The mark on the base could be a 3 or a W or an M.

Any (also general help, appreciated!!

This is Bohemian from the 1880s thru the 1910s. Usually you'll find two vases and a lidded one with matching decoration, to be used atop a chest of drawers ("garniture" = "kaststel" in Dutch) - but rarely found complete. The origin is Northern Bohemia, the area around Haida, the decoration was done in cottage industry and it is thought the marks on bottom identify the decorating family. Which of the factories made the glass has never been established, and you will probably not find out. Valuewise these vases are quite disappointing - a lot were made and I do not think there are specific collectors.

If the painting is good, then there are collectors willing to pay, certainly here in the UK and more so if uranium glass.

Thanks you both for the information, which I will pass on to the owner.

Actually I noticed that the quality of the paintwork was really rather good, comparing it to my rudimentary knowledge of comparables.
(Of course the subject is very much 'genre' and therefore a matter of personal taste.)
