Art deco light shade?
« on: January 03, 2010, 12:12:44 PM »
Hi all we bought this light shade and fitting almost a year ago as we thought it would go well in our art deco lounge but the more I look at it I have my doubts or maybe I am just growing a bit bored of it.  Could anyone confirm or deny for me please.  Also if anyone does know the manufacturer that would be great.
TIA
Margi

Margi,
it doesnt look too old to me.
Did it come with fittings , wires etc? Any signs of age?

Hi Andy it came complete without the rose which is not pictured with the standard two wires for french electrics, apart from the shade itself being filthy when we bought it, which was only 10 euros from a second hand shop, no other obvious signs.
Thanks
Margi

My experience with vintage lighting, which we collect, (Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Egyptian Revival and Machine Age) is that it almost always is made of non magnetic materials, as the older ceilings were in many cases lathe and plaster and could not support substantial weight. Spelter, or white metal with an applied finish or cold painted would have been much more common....

The types of brass ring connectors at the top of the "vines" are typical of modern production, as is the style in which the leaves appear attached to the "vines"

I am thinking that it is actually modern production Chinese, as the amount of current production lighting produced there is mind boggling.... At least in the images the glass appears to have a texture to it, and appears to have been pressed into shape.... Something I do not see an Italian manufacturer doing a lot of.....

Hi Craig yes the shade does have texture to it, I also agree very much with the magnetic parts, the reason I mentioned it.  We have a lot of antiques and normally use the magnetic test to determine their authenticity.  Magnetic alloys instantly give me doubts well at least with certain things.  Thanks for your thoughts.  It appears I am right with my grunch (is that a word).

If it's not, it should be!
It's still a decent sort of shade, it will, I'm sure, give a good but soft, light while hiding the bulbs.
