Hartley Wood?
« on: January 20, 2010, 03:03:24 PM »
A new addition to the glass menagerie that I believe to be HW - thanks to the help of a couple of glassy friends.  Anyone else got a clue?

Having a nightmare with my computer at the moment so forgive me if I can't reply quickly.

It's much nicer than the pic in the auction!
Sorry I can't help with old versus new, but I imagine if it was newer, perhaps it would be more "perfectly" finished? I believe HW is quite often slightly crude in finish. It will go beautifully with your "pink and blue swirls" IoWSG pieces!
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thanks for the brochure Christine, very interesting.

The vase is a bit wonky, the rim too, if that's an indicator of being early or not I don't know. May have to wait until I can get it into the hands of HW fan - handling it would probably make all the difference. There's a lot of bubbles seeded, large and small.  The vase is quite textured especially with all the bubbles, so not appearing to be mould blown at all.  Good amount of wear to the base.

It does look great with the IoWSG Pink and Blues, teamed them with an IoWSG ice block that's got a pink swirl and a IoWSG pink Azurene little cylinder vase.  They make quite a group and it's nice to have a new display.

PS just had a good look at the brochure and on page 7, point 7, it talks about a stamp of authenticity applied to the base.  Any ideas what it looks like? Anyone have an image?

Have answered my own question - found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ART-GLASS-VASE-SIGNED-ETCHED-CITY-OF-SUNDERLAND-1992_W0QQitemZ110485393984QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Art_Glass?hash=item19b9715240

A late shape (very unlike mine) and with the base stamp too (mine hasn't one). So I think there's a fair chance mine is not a modern piece at all - the swirling of the colour is not as defined or contolled in the same way this modern one is.
