Enamelled amethyst vase origins unknown??
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:27:00 PM »
This little vase was a recent purchase that i like but alas i have no information other than i think its continental, The vase appears to be enamelled onto the glass with flora decoration the main glass colour is very dark amaethyst i can only just make out this colour with a strong back light! Strange it appears to be 3 piece construction the glass batch must of been quite poor as there is lots of air bubbles and quite a lot of frits of differing colours throughout, I would imagine the enamelling would of been quite labour intensive so why not so good glass consistency?? Would anyone hazzard a guess of age/origin etc... Its 7.5" tall and quite worn to the base may have some age!n thanks. :chky:

I think they were a Bohemia based decorators with a sales office in Berlin. So you probably will not get very far... Truitt's Czech lass books are worth buying.

It looks like Bohemian work and typical vase shape. Black was a popular option at the end of the 19th century (and probably into the 20th). Silber & Fleming contain pictures (but no IDs) of a lot of painted vases offered in a wide range of opaque colours, including black.

The construction won't be in three parts, as it is mould blown.

The enamelling was generally done by home workers paid on piece work and it is likely that the company that commissioned the decorating bought the glass in.
