Vase-vaseline or citron colour -whats the difference?
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:03:39 AM »
Another purchase recently- lovely ovoid flat sided shape with pulled points to the lip. 20cm H flat polished base. I can see similarities with a few makers but cannot pin it down with any certainty- the colouring is what I would say is citron but "the books" say vaseline-what is the difference if any-just terminology? Also any  i.d. on a possible maker. TIA regards Carol

There are others who can provide a better answer, and I'm replying as we're close in time zone.

I wouldn't describe this as either vaseline or citron. Both are far stronger colours. Vaseline used to mean different things on either side of the Atlantic, but it always contained uranium oxide, which glows strongly under blacklight. I'm not up with the current thinking and terminology, but your glass would not be described as vaseline anywhere. Citron is the word used for the vibrant uranium yellow used by the Australian company, Crown Crystal.

That colour is known as CITRINE, after the precious stone of that colour.  The maker is ZBS, the time circa eighties.

I'm fairly certain that this Czech, Zelezny Brod (ZBS), and very similar to Miroslav Klinger designed pieces. You'll be happy to know that Zelezny Brod gave this colour the same name as you used to label your photograph: citrine. I have a similar vase in the same colour with a nicely engraved bird on it.

I can answer that. No, citrine does not contain Uranium and does not glow.
