hi,this is 7 1/2inch tall, about 5inch across body with ribbed bits on the outside,it has a snapped off pontil, when i got it yesterday from the charity shop it looked like it had been dug out of mud!they didnt even clean it before putting it on display Lee laughed at me for getting it but i love it,dont think its a decanter as there is no neck wear where a stopper has been, thanks kaz

It's probably a tumble-up (carafe) missing its glass

Definitely a carafe and a rather nice early one too in my opinion. From the style & use of pillar moulding I'd think this dates from around 1820-1840 give or take. It may never have been a tumble-up, carafes are also used for decanting wine for serving.

Id agree, carafe for water. Probably kept by the bed with a glass.
Strange, i found one this week in a charity shop, mine cut, probably a bit later than yours,
c1840-60. Mines definitely never had a stopper.

Not necessarily, i think yours is older, and moulded, and there are many collectors of both.
(mine probably took longer to make!)

Hi buttonfluff,
a very small pic, but it looks original,19yhC, it has a neck ring.
Is there signs of age wear on the base, on the parts where it sits on a table?
