Cenedese Paperweight - date and designer query help please
« on: April 10, 2010, 08:14:49 AM »
I recently bought this online, and think although plain, the colours are stunning. I don't have any other Murano paperweights, mine being mostly English or Scottish. I googled Cenedese and found some info about a designer called Antonio de Ros, who apparently used a red spot ( called a bloodspot) in his designs. I wondered if this is what this could be? Could he be the designer? Also the label shows the number 186/65. Could this be a date - ie 1965 perhaps?
Am new to this so any help or info appreciated. Regards, JAK West Oz

And if this is posted more than once - my apologies - I did it, then lost it and it didn't seem to have been posted so I did it again .  :-[

You might be interested in this thread. It gives Daros' son's email address and you could try him for an opinion.

Thanks for the tip David - I have just emailed him a polite query and photo, and the link to this thread.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a reply.

Cenedese did several animals with this type of inclusion. I've seen most of them attributed to Da Ros. Your paperweight was probably designed or at least inspired by him.

I've been confused about the last name. The glass community of Murano refer to the designer as Da Ros. We received the message from the son, but I've not heard anything since. Since the Baroviers choose the name Da Ros in their books, I've decided to stick with the most popular spelling, even if it is not correct. (Or compromise by spelling it DaRos to bridge the gap between correct and incorrect.) I do wish we could get verification of the name.

Thanks for the comments Anita. I will post the information (on the name and the pwperweight)  if I get a response from Mr Daros.

Something that may have happened is that he did his art under the name Da Ros, even though his name might be Daros. I think we ought to stick to the name Da Ros because it is the one used in all the published literature, including Murano Magic and all of the Barovier and Heiremans books. Most of Da Ros's designs for Cenedese were done in the 1960s. His tenure at Cenedese began in 1958 and continued through the 1960s.

The people who wrote the books knew Antonio Da Ros personally. There are thousands of references to his name. I don't think we ought to let a single email from a source that is really unknown lead us to ignore the literature.

"Bump" please. I have had no reply from Mr Daros /Da Ros. Does anyone know if my assumption of the date from the label at 1965 is valid?

Thanks

Since Da Ros worked with Cenedese in the 1960s, the year sounds right.

Do you suspect that the pw is not Cenedese? It looks very Cenedese to me.
