ID problem: Fritz Heckert Jodphur or Puatsch in Muhlhaus or ????
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:05:52 PM »
This vase has given me a lot of grief in trying to identify it.  One with the identical pattern is shown in Cappa's book Le Genie Verrier de l'Europe as a Fritz Heckert Jodphur vase made 1888-1890.  Cappa records the mark as crossed swords and two numbers.  My vase is unmarked, with a beautifully polished pontil.  The Corning Glass Museum in New York has the exact same vase as mine with Thomas Hawke's name acid etched on the bottom.  I spoke to Ms. Jane Spillman from the Museum and she said that Hawkes had bought some European pieces in the 1920s and put his name on the bottom for resale.  She was positive that this would have done in the 1920s.  I saw another of these pieces listed as done by Pautsch for Julius Muhlhaus in the 1920s and an auction house had one of these listed as Baccarat done in the 1880s.  What in the world is this?  Thanks!

I'm afraid I know nothing about the vase, but that is the prettiest vase I have seen in ages. Oh please  :fc:

Hi, Carolyn,

I am new to blogging so I am not sure what the cute Santa means--if this is what it looks like--a friendly holiday greeting, then  :fc:  (well, I clicked on the Santa, but I don't think it worked--it's going to take some time for me to figure out how to get icons into my messages).

The problem with the Fritz Heckert attribution is the timeframe.  Ms. Spillman is positive that Hawkes brought this vase back from Europe in the 1920s, yet by that time (I think) Heckert was out of the glass business.

If you are in the US then a later date date is realistic but if in Europe the earlier date could well fit. Cappa could be wrong and it is always a great assumption that the year of first production is the last!

Hi Albglass. Actually we are not blogging. That's more like writing a column on a website. Using the  :fc: I was simply indicating that I would ask Santa about getting it for Christmas. Of course, that being successful is just as much a fantasy as Santa is.  ;)

Thanks for alerting me to the possibility that the production of these vases could have occurred over some years, but since this was bought in Europe in the 1920s, it would have to be a very long timespan if Cappa is right about initial production in 1888-1890.

The pieces in Cappa's book are signed with crossed swords--no initials.  Does anyone know if Fritz Heckert signed his pieces with crossed swords?  I have Fritz Heckert examples either unsigned or with the F.H. and number(s), and I also have seen references to Heckert in script on some enameled glass.  But I have not read anything about the use of crossed swords.

The book "glas 1880 - 1930 Novy Bor und Umgebung", I believe published by the glasmuseum in Novy Bor (Haida), shows the crossed swords mark with the 327/XX (whatever number) was used by Julius Mühlhaus.
(see attached scan)

Warren

Thanks, Warren, for remembering to update the board with this new information.  Now all I need to find out is whether it was Pautsch in Mühlhaus who is responsible for the design, or someone else.  Cathy
