Moser wine glass with Queen Elizabeth's royal monogram
« on: May 18, 2010, 12:21:50 AM »
Hi folks,

I came across this Moser wine glass with Queen Elizabeth's royal monogram engraved on it..I know that Moser has been commissioned for full sets of crystal for various royals.....anyone know if these types of glasses were also made available to the general public?

thanx!

I don't think that is her monogram. Her cypher is EIIR; Elizabeth II Regina. I would expect her monogram to be an entwined version of that, not just an E; ER at the very least.

Neither do I think the crown is the right one; looks more like the one from Prince Charles' coat of arms.

I suspect what you have is something monogrammed for someone whose name began with E, the monogram of a non-British royal or a marketing ploy.

This exact engraving is shown in Moser's book as belonging to Queen Elisabeth's service...

The E under a crown is also used as a symbol of Catherine the Great:

Moser has confirmed that this is the monogram used for the Elisabeth II service. Supposedly a limited number of these were offered to collectors. I'm trying to find out what year they were offered by Moser.

HRH spells her name with a zee not an ess, however Moser might spell it. I've looked in the book, but I wonder if this was a gift rather than a commission for the reasons I noted earlier. Coronation year was 1953 and her state visit was in 1996.

Actually, to be pendantic, I believe she spells her name with a zed as she does not live in the US).

Canada! (to be pedantically correct!)  ;D

Anywho, I received an answer back from Moser. Supposedly they've been making exact copies of the same glasses that were given to QEII when she got married back in 1947....These were offered to collectors so I'm not too sure how many were made....

hat were given to QEII when she got married back in 1947

That would explain the inaccuracies relating to the crown and the monogram - she wasn't QE II, just Princess E.
