Designer .. and??
« on: May 22, 2010, 06:03:01 AM »
Colin Terris's 'Caithness Paperweights' provides a valuable reference for collectors.  Each listing identifies the designer.  This prompts the question "Did these individuals contribute to the production other than the design?"  I'm sure the answer will depend on the competencies and skill of each artist.  For example we know that Willy Manson does everything associated with the production a weight.  This might not, however, have been the case for everyone in the Caithness design group.  Will those with a fully understanding of this period at Caithness help educate me?

Cheers

Peter

The answer to this question is that some designers were able to make paperweights as well as designing them but others were simply designers. For example, Allan Scott designed many paperweights and made the lampwork for these but he did not actually make the paperweights, the same applied to Linda Campbell. Margot Thompson would design weights only whereas Helen McDonald would design and engrave weights. Whilst some paperweights were designed by glassmakers who can then make these weights the number is relatively small, the only way to get a 1005 picture is to list every designer you can find and go through them one by one.
Hope this helps

As suspected, and it's great to get specific examples from the Caithness group.

Thanks, Dave.
