17 Weights w/B. Toso and Murano Etched on Base
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:36:18 PM »
This seller has 17 Murano paperweights listed, all w/signature 'B. Toso' and 'Murano' etched on the bases.  What do you think about all of these being attributed to B. Toso?

Lily

(I wasn't sure whether to start this thread under paperweights or Murano.)

The only B. Toso I can think of is Barovier & Toso. They never signed the name like this. I've never seen any of their paperweights signed at all. I recognized a few Fratelli Toso paperweights in the mix. I didn't see but one that I thought could be Barovier & Toso. B&T paperweights were rather non-descript, so without a label are difficult to identify.

IMO, the sigs appear to be... how you say it?... not authentic.

You mean the F-word*, Anita!!!? :-X   Ah, forgive my strange sense of humor ..... 8)

I didn't figure the etchings were authentic signatures, however, the paperweights are indeed, Murano (IMO), probably 1970's and onward.  I agree there are some FT's in the line-up.

I think the ones that aren't FT are more contemporary pieces. The shame is false sigs on bottom are huge scratches, lowering the value of the pws to almost nothing. Most people don't have the equipment to polish such large scratches out.

This weight is from a different seller but looks similar to many of the weights scratched "Toso".  There is a label indicating A. Seguso.
on this one.  Any thoughts?

Are there any books that provide any info on Murano paperweights and their makers?

Lily

A. Seguso is a possibility. I haven't seen enough of their weights to be able to recognize them. So many of the Murano pws look alike. There are no good books that I know about for Murano pws. They are scattered among the other books and often just called Murano, instead of being attributed. There is only one Murano book I've seen that even considers pws and that is Leslie Pina's book on Fratelli Toso.

Thanks, Anita.  Guess I'll keep an eye out for that book.  Your help is most appreciated!
