Moulded & Enamelled Lidded Trinket Box with Bird Finial = J Umann of Potočná

(1/2) > >>

Mosquito:
Another recent acquisition which has me puzzled. The piece looks very French, 1920s-30s but I haven't been able to find the pattern anywhere.

It's a very nice quality item. There's an intaglio moulded pattern infilled with blue enamel. The finial is in the form of a tropical bird , decorated with sprayed on enamels in various colours. The base & rim have been very finely polished. There are no marks that I can see anywhere on the piece.

I think the bird once had a crest or similar on its head which has since broken off as there's a rough, unenamelled strip just on the top of its head.

Diameter is approx. 9 cm

Thanks,
Steven

Anne:
Hi Steven, there's a perfume bottle shown in Schránky Vůní, The World of Toilet Glass (by Jitka Lněničková and Petr Nový) which has these blue curls and birds on it, and the attribution is to J Umann of Potočná. I'll drop you an email about it later today. ;)

Ivo:
can you cc me?

obscurities:
Great Piece!!

Ivo:
There are  many more where these came from, and no one has so far managed to identify any of these powder boxes. So interested to find out who, when (1930s) and where.... France. Czechoslovakia, Germany and Belgium seem top candidates....
