ID for this vase with abstract pattern please
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:39:39 AM »
Hi guys,

This vase was with a large Whitefriars one which I bought at auction recently, and I'm wondering whether it's worth listing on eBay so would be very grateful if anyone could help me with identifying the maker. It's about 7.5"/19cm tall.

Thanks in anticipation, John.  8)

Can't help you John, but it looks very "pop art" to me, and at first I thought it was ceramic.   Is it as "dense" as it appears?

I think some of the surface effects come from the use of incompatible glazes - the dull greyish-black rough stuff seems to have that sort of pattern -  a hole-y sort of mesh.
But there's a bit more to it than that, I think.
It's reminiscent of the grey stuff used in some of Benny Motzfeldt's pieces.

I'm not suggesting this vase is or isn't anything to do with Benny Motzfeldt - just that it looks like the same stuff/technique has been used.

It's a lovely piece.

Sorry for the delay in getting back!

The vase has a rough texture on the outside ~ looks like it's been rolled in grit when still soft ~ but is smooth inside. The coloured pattern (reds/blues) appears to have been painted on but the deep purple colour (not grey/black!) is in the glass (I think!!). Have to say that I thought it was ceramic when I first saw it too Emmi! Glass is a reasonable thickness and appears fairly dense, especially when it's not backlit!

Thanks for the link Sue ~ had a look and it has a lot of similarities to some of the pieces there. Will keep looking!

I still think it's some sort of chemical-resistance/ incompatability thing which has produced the texture.

I also think it's a pretty stunning and lovely piece, well worth finding out more about it.
