I do not know WHAT to make of this -- Old Chinese Vase or What ???
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:31:35 PM »
 :hi: there:

Honest -- I do not know what to make of this.  I think it is  :or:, but then it has some good wear on the bottom.  So older Chinese?  Or not ?  :X:  The base is flat and polished so smooth, it reminds me of those Rocks cut in half, and then the inside are polished (Not sure what they are called).  There are 4 felt things on the corners, but does show wear -- yet the base looks like it was done very professionally, but then the glass looks a bit wonky.  So I really do not know.

It is about 5 inches tall at the highest point, and about 10 inches wide.....Not sure IF that is the remains of a label or, the remains from an old price tag.   I have no clue.

I like the bottom (so smooth) better than the top part of the vase -- If that sounds silly.  Kinda like a handkerchief (??) style.  Any clues on Maker, idea, or even a suggestion....

Help  :spls:

** (( I am going to add a couple more pics of the base, as I need help with this one.  All the Help Possible....))

Clueless in Canada...  :24:

Looks like what's commonly called a handkerchief vase to me.  Lots of different makers made them.  I kinda doubt it's of China origin.
Looks like a nice one  :)

I don't think it's mainland Chinese, certainly not recent Chinese, & older (70s/80s) production wouldn't have had such a well finished base. Japanese seems possible though - I've had Japanese pieces before with similar combinations of coloured & white glass. Wouldn't rule out Taiwan either....

Murano's a possibility as well.  I know Venini produced many variations, but I don't know about a square bottom.  The color also has me thinking Mexico.   They are also called 'drape' vases. -Buck

Hi :
The base of this is SO polished that it reminds me of those Polished Rocks (agate) that have been cut in half......the colors (on the bottom) of this Handkerchief bowl kinda remind me of that Rock.  As those Rocks are polished so highly -- and I feel the bottom of this bowl is like that...

Like this here:  http://www.crystalite.co.uk/agate-geode-805-p.asp

Hmmm.............I think Agate Rocks are big in Brazil -- Maybe that is where this Bowl is from (given the high polishing) and the colors like Brown agate stones.  Maybe the style bottom and colors were influenced by Polished Rocks.

Might be a lead............(or not).........??  Talking to myself here

I took my own advice here and googled around.  Now I did not find a Handkerchief vase -- I might have found something (kinda) similar to it in edges, and coloring...

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo http://cdn.overstock.com/images/products/L12705619.jpg

I hope not, as I hate to go down that Road again  :thud: :thud:  -- but so far - the closest thing I have found (???)

Up above I was thinking Mexico but Brazil is way south :usd:.    I like yours better than the one in that last link.  And i think your's is not real new.  From what I've seen in these types of vases what is fairly unique about yours Rose is that square base.  You would sure think that adding that to the search criterial and come up with something.  I've tried and got zilch.
