Big, Clear - Lots of Bubbles
« on: September 26, 2010, 10:49:43 PM »
:hi: I just got this today.  It is about 3.5 inches tall, so quite big.  Lots of Bubbles, and wear on the bottom.  Very solid weight to it.  Is this older  :or: maybe, as I do not have a clue.

Either that, or nobody liked it and kept moving into the shadows (re: the wear on the bottom)  LOL  :spls:

I think I had posted another one something like that here before (with no label).  So this is not a Repeat -- it IS a different one

Thanks in advance (TIA)

Ikea used to sell these (not sure if they still do - last time I checked was 2 years ago) with a little light underneath, in blue, green, clear and brown.

Yes, Ikea used to sell these, other colours were a deep blue and orange. There are some belief that they were produced by Whitefriars but that is open to speculation. They are big and heavy and if you want an example for your collection they are numerous and cheap to buy. I come across these frequently in local charity shops.

WF were out of business long time before Ikea launched the Chinese bubble balls.  :or:

Very similar paperweights were on clearance in IKEA for 99p each about a year ago - I'm pretty sure these were Chinese. But many small studios have produced paperweights broadly of this type; however, the base finish does look Chinese.

I've seen them for sale within the last 5-6years- new goods, Cancer Research Charity shops. Chinese, they come even bigger than this - up to approximately 7" diameter.

That is the main thing, that you like it. Makes no difference who made it, where it comes from or it's 'history'. I reckon even these modern weights that are being churned out in China now do have something about them and some can be very nice even though they may be frowned upon by some, they may even become valuable and collectable in their own right. It is the correct attitude in any collecting field, if you like it, buy it.
