Small - Bowl? Mould?
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:54:30 PM »
Can anyone tell me what this item is?

It's about 80mm tall.

It's nicely finished and ribbed on the inside which makes me think it's some type of mould. The domed end however is incredibly thick so that it could almost sits upright which makes me think maybe that's the way it's supposed to be?. I can't see any wear to the outside that would indicate that it sat in some sort of housing. There is also a pinkish hue to the glass which I've not come across before - any ideas?

Perhaps a drinking glass, designed to fit securely over a (maybe) rubber sort of stopper on a flask, for travelling?

You might be right but I would say that it's too awkward a shape. It's heavy in a very unbalanced way (with about 20mm of solid glass at the dome) and quite hard to hold on account of its diameter.

Strangely enough I think I know what this is - it's the dome which would have covered a small pressed bird & base, made by Nachtmann. We've had a complete one here before: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,8918.0.html

Steven, I can see it having that sort of use but the one in the link is defiantly different to mine. The lines in mine start at a central point at the dome and run almost to the bottom of the glass also mine is wider with at least eight lines showing in profile, the one in the link shows six. They may have made a variety of these of course but I would have thought the lines would finish at the same point relatively, It's given me an idea as to what to do with mine so Thanks!

I'm only guessing on this but it does remind me of the mixing bowls in (Georgian?) tea caddies.

I see where your coming from but would it not be smooth on the inside? those ribbed bits are quite pronounced.

Certainly looks like that. Sorry I didn't click on your original link Steven. I could have avoided making a silly suggestion.  :-[
