Back to the vase in question. I don't know whether it's a fake or not, but I spent a fair bit of time yesterday looking at Grover's English Cameo Glass. To me my studies say the rim looks OK, the colours look OK, some of S&W stuff seemed a little less well-defined than the Webb and there is a similar Webb (marked) vase (shape, design and colours, but 3 inches smaller).

I think the scratchy looking marks may be pencil marks trying to make the mark stand out more. These hot-stamped marks are quite hard to read never mind photograph ( I have a marked Webb Burmese).

It looks like uranium glass to me; that might be the clincher.

But it's painted enamels, not Cameo work, Mike.

Recieved, Mike - thanks. Excellent work,
(but not my taste, I'm afraid - I'm really not fond of flowers).
I did a google search, on the name - the only thing which came up with images was the owl on Mike's site!
I jumped to a stupid conclusion without sufficient evidence. :-[

how about putting our hands together for the guy that knocked up the first Portland vase  -  and when you consider how long ago he created the piece, how special he must have been  -  it remained the finest piece of cold worked glass for what, perhaps 1700 years??            So, all together - hip, hip hooray/for the best Roman of his day :hiclp:
