Silver top perfume bottle
« on: November 20, 2010, 09:24:08 AM »
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions about this silver topped perfume bottle?  It was sold to me as being by Stevens & Williams and dated 1910.  However, on closer examination of the hallmarks I found them to be not from 1910 but from 1943!  (The date letter is an upper case T but the top bar was worn smooth.)  The maker's mark appears to be Payton & Pepper of Birmingham, a firm which has been around since the 1800's until at least the end of the 1990's, and may indeed still be around today - does anyone know?

My question is, does the Stevens & Williams ID still hold, given the difference in date?  Also, does the cutting style fit with the 1943 date?  If so, has anyone any idea who the designer might be?   I am trying to keep an open mind about this bottle, given that it is of course always possible that the silver top could be a replacement, so the date of that doesn't necessarily have to relate to the bottle.  For that reason also, I didn't put this query in 'British Glass', as of course a bottle made anywhere could have had a replacement top made for it in Birmingham! ::)

Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks  :)
Leni

nice bottle - looks like S & W to me - date about 1910 is correct ! hallmarks on mountings - hm - the stopper could have been replaced or because of a damage it was mounted later on !  :or:

.... and could it be rock-crystal cut? Hmmmmmm?

(I suspect it could, and I suspect the stopper could well be a later addition too!  )
