Art Deco opalescent glass polar bear on rock any clues please?
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:55:23 PM »
Good evening everyone
I recently purchased this adorable opalescent glass polar bear on a rock.It is a lovely little piece.
There is a faint etched name under the base but it is very faint and can only be seen when in a certain position.
It reads something like Daniel?
I am not familiar with a lot of opalescent glass except the obvious ones such as lalique?
Wondered if there were any aficianadoes out there please? If I have spelt that word wrong forgive me I will look it up later in the dictionary lol
Thanks in advance!
Nige

Hi Nige,

The mark should read 'Danielo'. Don't know the maker, but possible Choisy-le-Roi. I've seen this model quite a few times, but don't know much about Danielo. Like Ferjac, CLA & Cesari it's one of those names that turns up on nice quality animal figures, but there's not much written about it...

Hi Steven
Many thanks for the informaion about this piece. It is really alovely little piece not very big but well made.
I have seen animals by Ferjac and Cesari before infact I used to have a bird and rather a mean looking fish by Ferjac.
I do have a glass dish with 2 polar bears on an ice flow in polished and frosted glass which I think is by Libochovice?
I do like the polar bear figures!
Best Nige ;D

If you mean the model shown below, then definitely Feigl & Morawetz, Libochovice.
Marcus identified it a while back, they are available with or without frosting to the bears. Produced from the 30s to 90s but the earlier ones have better mould quality.

That's the one! I have noticed the moulding is less detailed on some of them.
Do you know if they came in any other colour?
