Rosewater sprinkler
« on: December 09, 2010, 11:18:16 AM »
also known as a Persian flask, here is a version in what I assume is Gordiola glass. The enamel is rather primitive, the gold is not much better. There is nothing that can be construed as a signature - so I assume it is not decorated by Cirera or Royo. Any comments? And why can I not remember the Spanish word for these?

I've never come across something like this before - it's very pretty Ivo.

I'm sure you will have already looked elsewhere, but I wondered whether it could perhaps have come from Turkey or Iran?  Certainly there will be the Moorish influence in Spain anyway, but perhaps it may be worth searching those areas as well?
I like it.  How big is it?  also I'm wondering exactly how one 'sprinkled' the rose water with what looks to be rather a wide mouth to it?  Did it have a stopper of some sort to regulate the flow?

The original model is Iranian, I know that. As for Almorratxa, I think that is a vessel with 4 or 5 spouts, something to really sprinkle perfume about. This is a bottle with a pouring lip for table use - rose water was an important condiment on the moorish table. The height is 30 cm or roughly 12",  and I guesstimate it can contain a pint/ half a liter of liquid. I'd still go for Gordiola due to the gold and enamel combination.

Aah, thanks for that.  I had visions of rose water being sprinkled liberally all around, in order to scent the vicinity  :) hence my question on where might be a stopper.

The pictures that mostly came up when I put in my translation of rose sprinkler in Spanish were fire extinguisher heads  and then  a few glass perfume type bottles ;D so obviously not the right translation.

Ivo, there is a sprinkler that reminds me of yours at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310277248386. Maybe the picture will give you a bit more information.

I wouldn't be surprised if it trumpets. It is an uncomfortable looking position for the sprinkler. It hurts to look at the picture. The prunts are so large and different, I hoped you would be able to identify them.
