Sherry/grappa glasses - Marigold cut to clear
« on: December 17, 2010, 01:36:40 PM »
Got one of our charity shops out of a bit of computer bother last week.  Found a box of glass on my doorstep this morning as a thank you.  That was sweet of them.

This lot particularly interests me.  I think they might be related.

First of all 6 small-bowled, stemmed glasses, 17 cm tall.
The style looks Germanic, or maybe Czech.  They are top quality, irridescent all over, and appear to have been "carnivalled" in marigold before being cut.  The pattern is 3 vertical lines plus a vertical "wheat ear", repeated 3 times.

Also a candle-holder,  15cm tall.  Top quality again.  The bowl, only, is irridescent in the same way as the glasses.  It is cut through with a pattern of small flowers.

On the base is this mark, acid- or sand-etched.

It might say JR.  Couldn't be Riedel, surely?  I have a few wine glasses that I've picked up over the years.  They all are marked "Riedel".

If anyone knows the maker and age, it'd be much appreciated.

Ah, OK.  I just found confirmation that the candle holder is Riedel.  And fairly recent.
So, it's just the glasses.  They aren't marked, but could they be Riedel, too?

Yes that's definitely the Josef Riedel mark Chris. It's been on the board a few times over the years. :) Can't help with the glasses but they are rather nice.

Thanks, Anne.  I haven't found anything similar anywhere just yet.
Given the quality - and the candleholder, that seems to have come from the same donor - I've persuaded myself that the glasses probably are Riedel, too.
The more I look at them, the more I like them.  Whoever made them did a luvverly job.

Chris, thinking about your glasses, they remind me of some I asked about a while back - mine aren't engraved, but the comments might be useful. The earlier topic is here: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6364.0.html if it helps at all.

When I see mechanically made glass with marigold finish and course cut decor I immediately think of turkey  :fc:  - Pasabahce to be precise. But true, Riedel did of lot of this work too in the 60s, teetering on the brink of the Balkans as it were.

Thanks, Anne and Ivo.

These glasses are definitely not machine-made.  They're one-piece, but they're full of striations and minor variations (height, diameter of foot, etc).  Should have mentioned that before, sorry.

I assure you they're not hand made.

I assure you that they are!  Unless the machines are rubbish  ;D
But i was wrong about them being one-piece.  The feet were applied separately.
