Squiggly vase ID?
« on: March 09, 2011, 02:19:17 AM »
Another from me, I think I have the hang of this now (I hope!).

This is a squiggly vase I wouldn't normally go for, cobalt blue, I was afraid it might be Chinese but it seems to have some age on the base.  Its pretty substantial, thick and heavy.

 H - 19cm, width - 20cm

China or somewhere similar. That's not age, that's just rough grinding. Sorry

What you see on the base there is not age, but a coursely ground finish. It means the piece was finished on a pontil rod, cracked off and then smoothed over on a grinding belt so it would not fall over or scratch the table. In a quality piece you'd expect a much smoother bottom - anything from matt to mirror gloss.  Chinese usually have a better finish than this, but I would not entirely reject the idea. Mexico is top contender, followed by india. Very attractive colour, though.
