Thanks very much for all your thoughts.

If it is part of a multi-tier piece, I must say, I don't see how it would have stability. The middle is cut to clear glass - not a hole and it's not completely flat as it's 3 layers of glass, although the blue and white layers are not very thick.

Julie, I think a thick wide glass stem would have risen up from that holeyish bit in the middle (the same thickness as the holey ground bit) and had another plate as part of the stem on top as Ivo says.  It got broken so they ground off what was left of the stem and left it rough?  At least that's what I understood Ivo meant and it looks like that to me.

Unless of course there was some sort of medallion glued in the middle. It looks too bowl shaped to be a cake stand to me.

What about if it was something like this, with a medallion or an internal removable washable base to account for the rough centre????
