« on: March 22, 2011, 07:39:16 PM »
Have seen similar form pieces of mdina before but its not there type of colours more murano looking to me but thats all i know, It measures 4"tall and 5.5" wide and has a polished base it appears to have first clear then vibrant pink then dark red before a rich amber near the base you cant make all this out from pictures but it reminds me of the murano cased vases in some ways would love too know where it was made ... :X:

There have been a few threads about similar pieces. I seem to remember that posters concluded that many companies all over the world have made similar pieces, and it was often hard to attribute to a specific company. Countries that I remember include Italy, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Norway, USA, and Canada.

Yours looks like one of the better pieces. How well is the base finished? Is it chamfered? Neatly? That might help.

Sadly not chamfered on the sides of the base i did think it looked czech also the colours but i was kinda hoping it might have been a good murano company, It is attractive if unknown thank you very much for your reply

I think the lack of chamfering rules out Czechoslovakia, as you had already done,  some of the Swedish companies, and Canada. I don't think all Murano companies chamfered their edges. The colours, too, look more Murano to me than Scandinavian.

I would believe Chalet or Lorraine, but do not feel qualified to state one way or t'other. Have you checked the bottom, that's where Chalet etched their "signature".

Carolyn:

I would have said not Chalet nor Lorraine so I wonder if you've seen a piece that I've missed or forgotten about.

David

I'm adding a link to typical Lorraine and Chalet which are closest to this piece.

It is not remotely Maltese/Mdina in any way whatsoever!  :usd:

I was picking something up at a dealer today, and noticed a very similar bowl and picked it up - it had two murano? stickers on it (well, they were too faded for me to read, but the dealer thought they were murano). This is the link, the middle photo shows the remnants of the labels (maybe the shape tells something to those more in the know?). Not entirely sure if it's the same bowl, but it looks similar enough to me...

Always possible David, but wouldn't want to quote me, just going with my gut.  :wsh:  :ooh:
