Large pale blue posey bowl - ID please?
« on: January 21, 2006, 10:07:30 PM »
Can anyone tell me who made this please? I bought one identical looking yesterday but with slightly different dimensions and there are no marks. It has a polished pontil approx 1" / 2.5 cm across and is a pale blue like the Whitefriars sapphire blue vase I bought not long ago.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7381957258

I don't think it's W/f though - the seller suggests possibly Webb c. 1930, and there's one on W/f Mistaken Identities in green with the same suggestion.

Mine is 9.5" / 24.5 cm diameter, approx 3" / 8cm high, weighs 863g.

Any suggestions as to maker would be welcome, thanks. :)

Pics of mine are now at:

Oooh that is interesting Adam, thanks very much, I'll go check it out and perhaps ask on the Is It Whitefriars? site as well. :)

I've been and looked at the W/f 8993 posy and whilst the top is the same, the base shown in the catalogue has a sort of bulge whereas mine is more angular, so I'm still not sure about it being W/f.  :?  The colour is right though, which isn't helping!

Here is the one from the W/f mistaken identities site - the bottom is angular-looking on that one as is mine.

I hear what you are saying.

I am looking at online catalogues and auctions as well - see here from Whitefriars.Org

posy auction pages November 2000

posy auction pages May 2001

These are W/F posy bowls and have the same sides as yours - they both come up time again as 8993?

Also J Millers Collectibles pp339 is a W/F posy identified as pattern 8993 this has same sides as yours - in fact it's the same design exactly. Now I know Millers is not too hot at attribution but I think they got this one right when I look in conjunction with some of the good W/F websites

I have had a look at the W/F catalogue, I still think your posy is W/F 8993 - I think some design aspects changed during production or the catalogue is over extenuating the sides with its piece

Adam, thanks again. This is a great help. I've not had time to ask on IIW as I've been busy working non-stop but I'll pop over and ask later today when I've taken a photo of my bowl (rather than borrow someone else's pic). I'll let you know what they say.

This appears to have a circular pattern - trailed? - around the top part (mine has not) and is also much smaller than mine (less than half the size). This size is not shown in the W/f catalogues.

This is the same shape, but again is much smaller at 6" than mine. This size is not shown in the W/f catalogues either.

1938 Catalogue gives this: Vase Posy 3 sizes 12 11 10"d 1938 Cloudy d11"

Mine is 10" diameter measured across the curve of the top so could be an 8993.

Which issue of Miller's Collectables, Adam? I have four of them and the posy isn't in any of them. I assume you're looking at a more recent version than my early ones?

I'm tending to agree with you about mine, yes, but I feel those in the auction archive are unproven.

Thanks for all of your help with this, I do appreciate it. :)

Hi

Ref Millers 2006 pp339 also around 6" but look at the colour and shape

You say there is a 10" version - one of three sizes from 1938 catalogue.

I think at some point there must have been a 6" (6.25") version as well, maybe even an 8"

Thanks Adam.  Upate from the Is it Whitefriars? site.... someone else asked about an identical shaped but amber posey and the reply so far is not Whitefriars because the base shape is wrong... I'm waiting for other opinions as well there.
