Great vase, great price!

Here is my purchase of the day. I show it even though it is not Skrdlovice (but close enough :

Huge bowl by Jaroslav Svoboda, Svoboda glassworks Karlov. 38 cm diameter, about 5 kg of glass (I do like the fact that the Czech designers are never modest when it comes to the shere amount of glass used )

@David: you are certainly right about the difference in weight between the Gabrhel and the Palecek piece -- still the idea seems to be the same.
I couldn't find any reference when the Gabrhel piece has been designed...
edit: in the Ricke book is a Gabrhel vase in the same style, dated 1967.
The Palecek piece is 1975, so not much doubt which one came first.

Michael, according to Jindrich's Ceskoslovenske Sklo DVD, the Gabrhel piece in your album was designed in 1967.

P.S. My Vizner vase is great... I'd even say it's greater than great!  But it's been packed away now.  I'll have the joy of seeing it again on Christmas eve, when Gwiazdka comes.

P.P.S.  The Svoboda bowl is oddly interesting... I really like the way the wide bowl balances on the small paperweight base.

I like it (though it is very 1980s looking, which is usually not my taste).
It is only half as nice as your Vizner vase :mrgreen:, but cost only half the prize :usd:

Well done both of you.  The Vizner is a great buy, Anik, and the Svoboda is very good.  It's at least based on a Skrdlovice design, isn't it? Now if only there's a nice piece of Skrdlovice waiting for me at the collectibles show this morning.

13cm is small when you consider it's balancing a 38cm bowl. :usd:

Good news!  Canada does have a Santa and I can't have been as bad as I thought I had been. All a way of rationalizing me spending a fair bit of cash on the vase in the attached pictures. I found it at a Collectibles Show today in Vancouver. It's huge 39 cm and weighs 4.36 kg.  Svobodova, of course, and in a colourway that really appeals to me.  It is a very striking object.  Also, almost bought a huge Andromeda bowl at the same show, but my friend bought it instead.  He was haggling and I was hoping the deal would fall through and I would step in.  I suppose I have to learn to share the beauty.

So now we've got happy elves in Austria, Poland and Canada.

He thought it was either Czech or American studio glass. Unfortunately, that uncertainty didn't keep the price down. He charges ridiculous prices, but I managed to beat him down to merely extortionate price.
