Olive green small tumbler with leather band and badge
« on: July 12, 2011, 03:52:54 PM »
I picked this up out of curiosity as I'd not see one before, then Googled and found a set of them somewhere, but no clue as to where they were made. I suspect Scandinavia or Germany? There seems to have been a stamp on the base but it's so indistinct that it's unreadable. Perhaps the mould was too worn or perhaps it was fire polished off or whatever...  anyhow, can anyone tell me who, where and when please?
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Could the shape of the stamp be a sort of upright clam shell on a flatter base? (not at all unlike the logo of a well-known international petrol and oil company) ???????

And, if that were the case, might they have been part of an advertising promotion?????????

Ooh hadn't thought of that Sue, thank you!  :-* I was googling the motto on the badge and found that it means to "keep providence in mind" or "remember providence" and is the national slogan of Saxony, Germany. Found the same badge on different tumblers, http://cgi.ebay.de/4-alte-gruene-Glaeser-Wappen-Providentiae-Memor-/170646707314 and a vase http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1930-s-Italian-Opaline-vase-Providentiae-memor-badge-/230634606474 so they might be tourist ware...?

The badge would appear to appear on different makes of glass...

The logo thing is really bothering me - I'm fairly sure I've seen it on glass before. I'm clueless as to where! It might just have been on sommething I picked up to have a peer at sometime.
That would probably negate it being a company logo or a promotional thing .

Seen these around with a matching decanter with a plastic lined stopper, so suspecting Empoli, Bormioli or Oberglas - in any case a company dealing in mass produced glass.

Thanks Ivo, I saw a set with a decanter as well but couldn't see what the stopper was like.  I was wondering if the imprint of the base stamp might help running to earth which company it might have been...?

Sue, I know what you mean re the logo thing... I thought it might have been one of the Dansk Designs backstamps but the one I was thinking of is slightly different: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,37782.0.html - the colour is the same as the candleholders I have though but the glass is not so chunky as my Dansk stuff.

I'm struck by the similarity in shape to this Iittala one in a holder: http://www.designlasi.com/en/content/tsaikka-2008-2809-2009-sarpaneva-timo-en - although my green one is a shade taller at 87mm, the diameter is the same at 65mm. Could they have been made by Iittala for a customer, hence the base stamp?

Time to chuck a spanner in the works. >:D
I have been reminded of were I have seen a shell shaped logo on glass - it's on some bits of Caithness - the hollow engraved/blasted "fishing float" paperweights have a clam-shell logo on their top-knot.
