Topic: Stunning large bowl - Murano or Czech?

Large bowl in purple and blue which measures 31cm wide and 6.5cm tall. The base is flat but has a concave centre.

Is the base more characteristic of Murano types of glass? I have looked and not seen this particular pattern within the Chribska catalogue online.

I agree with you that the base is more consistent with Murano than with Czech (Chribska), and so are the colours and form. I think you're safe with Murano.

I have seen another much smaller bowl, only19cm across, in the same design advertised for sale and said to be "Murano Sommerso"? Possibly fact or possibly pure fiction? Are their any online catologues for such wares?

You can see the colours and that form of base in Archimede Seguso's pieces. I am NOT suggesting that this is a Seguso piece, but that his work was widely copied. Here are a couple of pieces I have. The first piece I think is Murano and the second I'm pretty sure is Chribska (the label is a good clue). The colours in the photos aren't quite right, but you get the idea.  The bases are quite different.  The reason is that the Murano piece was blown in an optic mould but I don't think such moulds were used much in Czechoslovakia.

Thanks David, thats interesting. The difference with my piece is that it has a circular well cut into the base, I just wondered if this was seen as specific or an annomoly of a particular maker.

The well isn't really an indicator of any maker, although it's seem more in the products of some companies and not very common in Murano.  It's there because they to take out that much glass to get rid of the pontil mark.

The 'well' is in fact the result of grinding and polishing to revove the 'scar' left by detaching from the pontil rod.
