I've seen this sort of pontil mark on pieces from Imperial, Fenton and Durand that were made in the 1920s/30s. This kind of punty may be credited to the small group of European skilled glassworkers who worked, in succession, in those three plants. We think this punty would get good adhesion between the punty and the object and would be better for "cracking off" because the resulting mark or scar would be somewhat easier to finish by grinding/polishing.
