I think I may have inadvertently stumbled on what this is - I think it is known as a 'Butterfly wing' brooch.

yes, made of butterfly wings (personally I find that a bit creepy actually...a bit like people who collected those butterflies and pinned them in trays eek) but mounted under glass or perhaps 'celluloid'? as I saw another id'd as.  I think mine is under glass.  Also mine says Patent applied for on the back - all the ones I've seen have a patent number.  And as yet I haven't found one as beautiful as mine  :angel:
