Whitefriars? Dartington? Wedgwood? Czech? Little jug
« on: September 29, 2011, 07:35:21 PM »
Picked up this little jug to go with my collection of 1970s bar ware.

handle is clear
body is black/smokey (don't really know the term)
base has ground pontil like those found on Dartington, Kings Lynn/Wedgwood (decanter I have), Whitefriars bark vases and possibly even Prachen (?)

I've had the blue versions of this jug a couple of times.  People used to swear blind they were Whitefriars but that was refuted as far as I can remember.  I think the jury's still out on these jugs.

I am not a man

It's really hard to see the jug with your hand and all that background; much better to use a plain white background. I would suggest Krosno as a possible because of the ground pontil mark and the clear handle.

They come in quite a varied selection of colours - often I direct people to my blog, and they then say, but mine is blue, it is not the same,  mine must be Whitefriars!  I do despair sometimes

Thanks Emmi. Mine IS different, it's smokey!

Had a look at the Krosno site. Good history. Limited distibution network. Anyone know where they were sold in the UK in the post-war period?

I'm pretty sure M&S bought their stuff, just for a start, recently and in the more distant past.

that would tie in with what I read the other day about M&S, Liberty and John Lewis (?) carrying stock that was unmarked.

Whilst they're not the exact same shape, there are a couple of smokey small jugs with a Krosno label advertised on ebay at the moment

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Glass-Jugs-Quantity-two-/170700550368?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item27be8bb0e0#ht_500wt_1361

I found a couple of your jugs recently (in amber and blue) and got very excited when I thought they were Whitefriars (I found them listed as Whitefriars on what I thought was a reputable auction houses website). It's all a learning curve (for me anyway!)
