I think I was the underbidder on the blue one.  I thought I had plenty of money on it to buy it and couldn't believe it when I didn't!

The blue one is better, but it isnt that much better!

Hi,  I bought this last week at an auction. The auction house had shown a picture of a mixed 5 paperweight lot but left this inside its box!!! I've re-entered the other weights in the next auction but fortunately no one else on-line seems to have bothered to ask for a photo of the Whitefriars weight. I paid a reasonable price against someone in the room but still way below value for this beauty.

PS. It's a 1980 PG103 random florette cane double garland BUT with the very rare ILN centre cane ( Illustrated London News). This exact design is listed by Brian Slingsby in his guide as a design trial with very few made or even a "one off". Well definitely NOT a one-off now.

I think that's very beautiful but my curiosity lies in why they would produce a one off for the Illustrated London News?  I can imagine these might have been commissioned to be given as presents to Advertising Clients of the ILN.  I would have thought they might have asked at least for a handful to be made for senior clients if not more.  Or maybe they were only a one-off or two-off as they could have been made as trials for a possible gift  but not bought by the ILN in the end?

Maybe a clue in the date m Whitefriars closed in 1980 the place was in a bit of a mess at the end maybe they were a commissioned run that came just before they pulled the plug.... maybe?

Hi flying free,
                       I'm sorry I've caused some confusion as I didn't tell the whole story. Brian's guide on Whitefriars says that a number of different designs were trialled for the ILN weight which was finally issued. He lists this one based on the PG103 and states that the actual issued design  was based on the P25 weight or "weight within a weight". Brian doesn't list any other trials but I also have an ILN trial weight based on a PB302 "petal" design.Whitefriars would quite often make a series of different options before deciding on the design to be issued.

Brian doesn't give the number of ILN weights issued in the P25 format but they can't have been many as I have never seen one outside of Brian's guide.

I hope this makes things clearer.
