Former blue Art Deco ? goldfish bowl thought's.
« on: December 01, 2016, 05:07:12 PM »
Obviously used as a goldfish bowl at some point by the amount of water tide marks and staining from the rim down and took a good hour to polish back, one of my recent favourite finds for a pound and i can not find anything similar, i'm rough guessing it might be 1920's due to the sharp cuts which look not to have been acid polished.

It's very heavy, 2.2kg and the glass is 10 mm thick. The base has worn through a lot of the polished surface.

7 inches in diameter and height.

Regards Chris.

hello Chris  -  my suggestion is that this could just possibly be a 1950s - 60s Borske Sklo cut ball vase - although appreciate those seem to have been smaller than yours, and possibly of a thinner glass.             Have a look if you can find one on the web somewhere and you'll see what I mean.
The cutting on the Czech. pieces is very reminiscent of solar orbits and a sort of planetary appearance.

On the other hand I could be wrong completely. ;)

I feel the style of decor is quite Czech too.
The whole thing reminds me of an unidentified similarly large cut piece in uranium glass that Lustrousstone has.
It doesn't weight as much as this, although it is about the same size. The glass isn't as thick.

Thanks both, tricky when there is nothing to compare to, lovely quality and well made and i think might remain a mystery.

The pattern repeats itself three times and is near perfect and hand cut but all of it differs.

I'm not even sure its a rose bowl as the upper rim only measures 1 3/4 inches or 45mm in diameter.

lamp base?
Also feels Czech 'space age' to me but wasn't that type of design quite popular in the 30s? maybe? or have I remembered incorrectly perhaps.

Yes very similar, I bet those vases are not common, great styling. It's hard to explain in words but sometimes I find a piece of glass and I think it's a bit special for some reason or another and I think this is one of them, it could be a lamp base as the top is scratched and there is a small rim flake chip on the underside of the rim that could have been caused by something being over tightened.
