Mdina Carafe - Date Confirmation..
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:45:16 PM »
Hi All,

Not always the most popular of designs the Mdina carafe, however, this particular example appealed.

Wondering if it was possible to date to pre 1972..?

Measures approx, 10inches high and 3 inches across the base.

Good characteristics, with good colouring and iridescence, applied prunt with Maltese cross and ground concave pontil mark to base.

Thanks
Greg

Yes. The polished pontil mark wasn't used after MH left, to my knowledge. This has lovely colours, I'd hazard a guess at a Boffo for it's maker. Something about the way it's kind of cloudy is reminiscent of the cloudy bits in Malta Decorative glass. It's also a slightly unusual shape for a carafe - an early shape, tall and slim.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thanks for the info Sue. Interesting thought regarding the similarities in terms of the colour and the cloudy pieces of MDG, I hadn't thought to link the two, but now you mention it, one of the Boffo's is probably not a bad bet.
