Help to ID iridescent glass bowl, silvered back please?
« on: February 14, 2012, 01:39:29 AM »
Hello all!

I have this sparkling iridescent bowl with a silvered back.  It has 3 feet, and meaures 7" in diameter, 2" deep.  Any idea on the maker, or what technique was used to get this effect?  Thanks for any help!  :rn:

Welcome to the group!

This is a very good group of folks to ask questions of but we will need pictures to help providing answers.  If you could post several showing your piece from different angles and closeups of particularly distinctive features such as feet or finials.  The pictures shoud be sharply focused and a plain background is much better.

Hi Sid,

Thanks for the welcome, and looking at my post!  I thought I did upload photos, I am going back now, and try to figure out what I did wrong!

Hello

You may need to get them under 125 kb which I think is the limit here.  My recollection is that the loader doesn't give you a warning, it simply doesn't post the pics.

LGW - Leinauer Glaswaren from Germany did this type of strong iridescence on bought in pressed glass. I believe they went out of business in the 1970s. Search this board for LGW or for Pfauenauge (peacock eye) the official name of this technique for the full story.

Back in the 1990s Carnival collectors saw several items like this appearing and we wondered what it was. I contacted Siegmar Geiselberger and over the course of several months, the background story came together. In 2000 (in our glass journal "NetworK") we wrote an article about LGW, which you can read on the first link below. In the ensuing twelve years we've seen many more examples of this kind of iridescent treatment, and I believe that there was very possibly another maker (maybe more) doing the same kind of vacuum iridescence. Anyhow, I am sure yours is LGW (the silver back is the give-away).

Here are two links to read about it. The first is on my current website, the second is from my old (archived) website.

Thank you very much Glen! I was totally baffled, I had never seen anything like this! It is beautiful!

Kind Regards,
Elaine
