Colour is sometimes applied over clear because colour is expensive. They use a very intensely coloured slice of glass and apply it to a clear gob. I've seen it done and you can't tell http://lustrousstone.co.uk/cpg/displayimage.php?pid=899

So, for those of us who are still puzzled (i.e. me!) is the bowl at the start of the topic Webb or Richardson, please?
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

not sure that it's possible to say beyond any reasonable whether Webb or Richardson, unfortunately, although for my money I'd log it as Webb based on the paler colour.         Shame that the poster doesn't have a piece of known Webb (in amethyst) with which to compare it.
According to Hajdamach, when the Richardson factory was failing - in the early 1930's - they were taken over by Webb, and Richardson then  rented space at the Webb factory in an attempt to economize and stay in business.        This author also says that pieces made by Richardson subsequent to this take over period, and when they were operating out of the Webb factory, were marked as Richardson.

Do we assume that right to the very end, Richardson were using their own formula for this particular colour of glass, thus maintaining their deeper purple, as opposed to Webb's paler amethyst?               sorry it appears we can't give you a definitive answer Anne :)

Going back to what Christine said about casing I thought cranberry glass was one colour until I picked up a bowl with a tiny nibble and the clear casing shows quite clearly.

Paul, thank you, I wasn't sure if I'd understood all the previous posts and if a conclusion had been reached or not.
