candy-stripe vaseline/cranberry/opalescent nappy
« on: April 29, 2012, 02:10:10 PM »
I got this piece last week at a big regional show in the US (Hoosier Antique Show, Indianapolis).  The show is 2X a year.  Maximum diameter (without handle) is 5 1/2 inches.  The vertical cranberry stripes (12 total) are more predominant on the outside than the inside.  The pontil on the bottom is almost non-existent: there is a shallow depression, and it might not even be a pontil mark.  It is smooth on the base (no snap off), but it does not appear to be ground.  Yet, a punty rod would have been needed to do the opalescent treatment and attach the handle.  (the pontil mark is a side note only and not my major interest in this piece)

Anyone know of a manufacturer who did this sort of candy stripe look with cranberry and vaseline opalescent glass?

In the uk, a "nappy" is a baby's diaper - is there another, translatable name for this?

A nappy is simply a small usually one handled bowl. It's for serving things such as lemon slices, olives, candy etc.
Really a pretty piece you have there.  :)

I don't know about the cranberry but Pantin glass has stripes in it, but they are usually pink with an iridescent, so i don't know.
