Topic: ID Help? Handblown Opaque Art Glass Wine Glasses / Stemware

Hi everyone,

I picked up a set of 8 really unusual wine glasses that I was compelled to buy (of course)! They are either beautiful or ugly, I'm not sure yet!

The glass is almost opaque, white almost gray in color, with many bubbles and occlusions.
Hand blown, with rough pontil mark, and thick.
Size varies slightly, but each is about 3" wide by 7" tall.
Somewhat crude in the execution, which in some strange way, adds to their charm

Anyone know anything about this type of stemware, or where I can find more info? I personally have never seen anything like it.

The fact that you have 8 should tell you that it is relatively recent, or you might have ended up with less than that. It seems these hand made and rather uneven items were produced in Egypt. The technique is Pulegoso - whereby at the end of the cycle some kerosene is added to the glass batch. (there are various recipes not all as explosive as that).
Glasses like these are often sold in other Mediterranean countries (Morocco, Tunisia) ; mostly the colours are dark blue, green or bottle brown. The white variety is less often seen.

So is this type of glass a collectible, or more of a tourist souvenier glass? I did some reading on the Internet, but am not finding much info about recent production.

Not really a collectable, bur very useable. Not sure what for. White wine, iced vodka perhaps.
