I wonder what the costs to the maker(s) of these fakes were in reproducing the Paul Ysart canes? Presumably moulds had to be produced which can't have been cheap? Did they actually make much profit before the fakes were recognised?
Although this wouldn't have applied to the lamp worked ones.

Hi Nick

The fakes were made in a glasshouse somewhere which would already be equipped with the necessary moulds. Looking at the weight in question the complex canes for the garland are very simple and it looks as if they have been constructed just using one simple star mould which every glass house would have. Likewise the cane in the centre of the flower - very simple.

Re the lampwork - there are just three cased canes used to make the lampwork brown, blue and green and it would take a lampworker no more than 5 or 6  minutes to make the lampwork for a PW.

So special material costs zero.  Two glassworkers would be able to turn out a minimum of 6 an hour - possibly 8 or 10.

To make glass you need yet so few: workshop, materials, tools, and above all energy.
For one working day of 7 hours are for sure the cost will be $ 100.
The labor costs for two workers for 7 hours are: 2 workers  x 7 hours x $ 30 / hour = 420 $
Altogether about 550.- $ !
Or 412.-  Euro.
Or 350.-  British Pound.
Does it make sense to make a Paul Ysart Fake?

Hi Casalibra

The fakes were made in the 1980's - 30 years ago in a/some glasshouses
that had all the tools and raw materials - I doubt that production of the fakes
was done full time - more likely a couple of glassworkers slipped back in the
evenings after their normal days work and put in 2 or 3 hours making them.

Even using your current day figures,  in 7 hours they could make 50 - 60  fakes
so the mastermind of the scam would get the fakes at roughly £10 a fake for all
materials, heat and labour. Certainly worth while when KNOWN Ysart fakes are
regulary selling on E-bay for over £100, a profit of £90 per fake sold or using
your figures £4500 - £5400 per days production !! And if the weights were not
immediately exposed as fakes as happened when they first appeared then the
profit would be 4 or 5 times these figures.
