Sulphide
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:55:44 AM »
I have  bought this weight,  It has a polished concave pontil mark with external worn   ring, could it be late 19th C - early 20th C.

Belgium, Alsace???

Many thanks.
Marc.

Could it be Chenee, from Belgium?

Hi.  I would suggest generic Belgium / Alsace - ie a piece from one of many factories in the region. The sulphide is good (but probably bought in), whereas the rest of the paperweight is 'vaguely competent'.

thank you Marc :) it's helpful to see the pontil mark because I have a vase with a similarly ground pontil mark (old, I think Art Deco period)  and it all adds to the picture when trying to work out possible age etc. even though yours is a weight and mine is a vase :)

Alan do you think late 19th early 20th for timing as suggested please?

Hi m.

Hard to say on timing, as similar style paperweights were made for such a long period.  The base suggests to me that it is newer rather than older, as does the clarity of the glass, so I would vote for first half 20th century.
