variation on decanter taster stopper???
« on: June 30, 2013, 02:43:41 PM »
not remotely similar to any hollow-peg taster stopper I've seen, but obviously with the matt stub it looks as though it could possibly have some vaguely similar use, and was presumably pushed into the top of some sort of glass opening  ??        About 7.1/8" (180mm long), and with some very indistinct and crude wheel engraved decoration.     Top rim has been ground smooth with a fine bevel on the outer side.           One very large whitish stone  -  and glass doesn't look very grey, so guessing not too old, but could be late C19 perhaps.

Thanks for looking and grateful if someone has the anwer as to its purpose (it looks booze related) :)

thanks - must admit that hadn't occured to me  -  the epergnes I see usually are either coloured or far more attractively shaped - as per the attached.           However, looks as though you may well be correct :)

I was wondering if you could float it in your booze - some sort of specific gravity measure?

know what you mean, Sue  -  that's what got me thinking along the lines that it was alcohol related................however, I suspect that Peter is right, he's very knowledgable.
