Modernist shape cloud glass ashtray????
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:51:53 AM »
An unusual ashtray that seems very similar too cloud glass to me it's been mould blown i think as i can see seams but with a polished smooth base with a good amount of wear, It measures 3.5" long and 23/4" high. Seems a fairly stylised design that ive not seen before. Any thoughts on age or origins please?

Is it really glass, I'd have guessed ceramic from the images.  :o  It's not what I think of as cloud - the only thing I've seen in this colour are some ball-shaped candle holders for Wuidart, so that might be an avenue to explore?
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

I would have said ceramic too. But if it is glass, then maybe Sasaki?

a more than likely reason for the appearance of a cloud effect is simply that the colourant and glass have not been mixed/combined fully  -  could be wrong, but if this were blown then wouldn't there be a polished pontil/blowing iron scar somewhere.           Not old, in my opinion - no particular reason for thinking it's older than 1960 - 70, or even more recent.
quote...................."Seems a fairly stylised design that ive not seen before"........ not so sure that I'm seeing what it's a stylized design of  -  a barrel did you have in mind :)
I assume it's solid  -  and do the mould seams encircle the piece, or are they limited to part only.

Hi and thanks paul for the questions the seams are limited to one side in the middle which leads me to believe it was in a two piece mould but can only see remnants on one side, I guess the colour is an odd one although it does look a lot like cloud glass. The base has been polished to create a smooth firm surface..The design i guess is very barrell shaped lol maybe not so modernist after all...

It's a very odd construction; is it sealed?
