Sam Herman Signed Globe London 1967 - Further Opinions Sort...
« on: September 09, 2013, 12:57:16 PM »
A recent acquisition, which I was hoping to get some further opinions on.

A small heavy studio glass globe, which is signed ''Samuel Herman 1967 London 90''

Both the colours used and the signature both seem to accurately fit the time frame. However, I do not recall seeing another piece which has received the same surface treatment to this piece before, which appears to have been acid etched.

The base also has a ground and polished concave pontil mark, however the glass is very thick indeed.

I'm fairly sure the piece is genuine however, would welcome other views.

Many thanks,
Greg

Gorgeous, Greg!
It looks to me to have been treated in what is called corrosso (and I may have spelled it incorrectly) in Italian. I think it's a particularly specialised acid treatment.
Your pics are fantastic.  ;D

Thanks Sue.  :)

Pleased the globe finally arrived safe and sound I've been eager to have a close look at it. I was thinking about the '90' at the end of the signature the other day and was wondering if this was possibly due to some form of numbering/signing format at the time..? From memory I think your piece which was also blown in 1967 is signed the same, although followed by the number 120.

I did email Adam earlier today, so hoping he can take a quick look over when he has a moment free.

The number on mine is 107. I had to go and check - well remembered, Greg!
I didn't worry about it, but the 90 on yours did worry me a little - given 90 can also be seen as a recent date number.
(I did wonder if it might have been signed on a later date, but given our bits both have numbers, perhaps there was a vague numbering system early on.)
I'm hanging on tenderhooks, waiting for Adam's contribution....

Lovely Greg, I do like the acid cutting, reminiscent of 1930s work by Daum or Maurice Marinot. ;D

Some Marinot bits and bobs here: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/MauriceMarinot?authkey=Gv1sRgCPzjyavV74zLYQ#

I had noticed the Marinot-like aspect myself - or a slightly Benny Motzfeldt-y one.
Not bad company to be associated with.  ;D
