George Davidson "Victory in Europe" 1945 Glassware
« on: November 02, 2013, 04:13:51 AM »
Greetings from Downunder, again!

I have recently acquired a glass cocktail shaker and on the base is a large " V " which takes up the whole area. (Pics attached). I know Davidson produced a beer mug with a large " V " on the side (Pamela's Pressglas site has an amber one on display) but I am not sure if other items were also made. To my mind the serifs on the V and thickness of the strokes seem identical.  Do I have a piece of Davidson here, or are there any other thoughts on this item? Many thanks. Barry

Since the previous post I have had a response outside GMB from the George Davidson site "Cloudglass" (thanks Chris) who advises the pattern or type of glass is NOT one made by Davidson.  And so my theory regarding the "V" is incorrect and I should cast my net wider to find the manufacturer.

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Thank you,
Barry

Your theory could be correct insofar as the punch used to produce the V in the mould was made by the same maker

Thanks for your response Christine.

Yes, the "V"'s do look identical. The shaker cannot be too rare a piece as it is the second one I have seen in around 2 years, in Australia, but the former one was too expensive to purchase!  If the piece is not Davidson, as I am led to believe, I wonder how Davidson's "V" appears on the base of a non Davidson item.  The "V" is relief moulded on the base and does look identical. (I am a printer and I have lots of experience identifying typefaces).

Any suggestions would be very welcome!

Barry

Things like punches, crimps, etc. were not necessarily made by the glass maker but by specialist companies, which sold them to whoever wanted to buy. Moulds were sometimes made in-house or sometimes to order by other specialist companies. A V wouldn't necessarily be proprietary.

I'm inclined to think that there are sufficient differences between the font of Davidson's VE monogram - see the attached pic. - and this example, to suggest that a different mould punch was used.
The serifs are heavier on the Davidson V and on the shaker there seems greater width variation between the two arms.      Don't know whether the mass of small serrations are part of the V or perhaps a moulding defect.

Sorry, but can't help with an id for the shaker though.

Thanks Christine and Paul for your input.

Probably, if the shaker was a commemorative piece as I originally thought, the "V" would have been given more prominence and placed on the side of the 'shaker. I will continue my search looking for a glass maker beginning with V.  Think I'll have a Martini . . . where's the Vickers!

Many thanks
Barry
