What"s this all about?
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:22:33 PM »
Hi again, the blue when i first saw this made me think it was new, however the base hints at age or alot of use,i think it was encased in white then blue and cut through to the clear glass, interestingly it has small snippets of writting on each window,"je" being one that could be French,i get the feeling it's missing it's lid and it does have a bit of a ring to it,any idea's,many thanks.

looks like an old Bohemian becher to me (possibly depending on what is written on the windows) given the wear on the base.
Is it possible to add a size please
Also is it possible to please roll up a dark or black material and pop it inside the vase then take a photo of each of the windows, then we can see what is written on each?
Is the writing engraved btw or enamelled on?
It would be great to see the colour of the blue more clearly as well without light behind it.
Possibly dates mid 19th century - I don't really know though, I'm not used to seeing them without some form of cut or angled foot at the bottom whereas the opaline overlay on yours goes right to the bottom.  It's really pretty!
Lovely piece.
Thanks
m

That is a Ranftbecher, Biedermeier Bohemian or I suspect in this case - Swedish. It would be fun to know WHAT is written in the windows. It has never had a lid and is probably in semi-cristal hence the ping.

oops Ivo and I crossed posts  ;D
The Swedish might explain why I'm not used to seeing that kind of finish at the foot?

Is it Polish?  Maybe a name?
ah, moved it round and google says Slovak detected.  So possibly written in Czech?
mm,no google just picks up characters and says what it thinks it is dependent on how you put them together.
No idea sorry.
