Egermann Compared to Biedermeier Ruby Cut To Clear
« on: November 08, 2013, 05:37:13 AM »
Normally I walk by this type of glass, however at a sale today I picked this up because it appeared to be of superior quality, heavy thick layer of both clear & Ruby, 1 3/4" polished pontil, superior cutting, etc. Size is 7 1/2" height with a 2 1/2" diameter, has wear on bottom. Is there any way to tell Egermann from Biedermeier production? The color looks as if its a deeper red like Biedermeier more so than even earlier Egermann, but I am at a loss as to how to tell them apart. Thanks for any tips/advice.

problem is that much of the Biedermeier production came from Egermann who invented the process of flashing - both yellow and red. Over the years some technical improvements have been made but basically the concept is the same, as are the models.

Of all the companies who have made c-t-c over the years, Bohemia was the largest, and of the Bohemians, Egermann was the largest.

The modern landscape is easier: almost all ctc glass is made by Ajka in hungary. Their red is distinctly darker.

Sorry Ivo I am late getting back. Much appreciated information especially the Biedermeier/Egermann connection that I was unaware of & sheds light on the cut to color scene.
