New to the group - Large Venini Vase
« on: May 10, 2006, 10:48:24 PM »
Good afternoon, evening or morning (depending on your location)

I am new to this group and was hoping to get some help to accurately  date a large Venini vase.
It is 14 inches high and very heavy. With various color rings throughout the glass. It is almost hour shaped or cinched at the waist of the vase. It also has a 3 line, acid etched signature
Venini
Murano
Italia.

Would anyone like to assist me with this one?

Thank you,

Hi Karen,
We have to talk about your lighters sometime!
Looks like the signature was in use from 1946-1965. If the signature is etched, then it is after 1965.

Fantastic piece!!  You should be proud to own/display it.  If not, John Toomey or the folks at Wrights would love to have it for their Modern auctions.  It is exceedingly rare that a Venini piece surfaces in this part of the Midwest (Minnesota), especially of that caliber, and probably Chicago as well.  (Out of curiousity, how did you aquire it?).  I don't own any signed Venini, and I should get used to the fact that I'll have to pay "retail" since Venini signed just about everything they produced and with the Antiques Roadshow and the internet, any schmo can figure out its value (at least in relative terms)

Charles.

Thank you Charles for your kind words.  It will not be staying with me - unfortunately I cannot afford to keep it (I have 3 rambuncious boys) who have no respect for fine glass.

I actually acquired this vase ay an estate sale that I was invited into early. I found many a strange item in this house. I was mooning over 100 sq feet of concrete blocks with designs in them and the house itself. Gorgeous waterfront property, with lots of windows built in the 50's by the architect. They obviously traveled well.

I must have missed those episodes of ARS that spoke of Italian glass - this schmo thought it was Mexican until someone let me know that it may be signed.  I just knew it was unusual - and I like to buy the weird and unusual - it always pays off.

Actually finding Italian glass is quite easy in the Chicago area, lots of Italians here, in fact I'm married to one and grew up in a large predominently Italian neighborhood.  I have been blessed to be able to purchase lots of Italian glass over the years. I've seen my share of clowns and animals and quite a few bowls.

Now I know to take a closer look at all my Italian Glass.
I must have had a horseshoe up my backside last weekend! LOL!

WOW what a superb find!!!!
Designed by Fulvio Bianconi around 1963 and part of the banded range of vases, this was the biggest of them all and rare as hens teeth. Markings are dead right for that period and it's all original. If you are going to sell it  then track down a specialist sale as this is valuable and likely to get collectors interested from a wide area.
If you do sell it, please post the sale details on the board here as depending on finances at the time, I'll probably be one of the many bidders. Good luck
Paul
