Can anyone throw any light on this glass polar bear dish
« on: September 21, 2016, 07:26:22 PM »
Hi.  Hope someone can help.  Found this glass polar bear dish in the north of the UK and am not even sure what it's use is (besides being a dish) never mind date and maker.  At first I thought it was simply a moulded piece mainly because there is a seam that runs along the underside of the head and neck and also at the rear, but there is no seam along the top, bowl or along the base and looking closely there are a small number of air bubbles in the piece.  The base itself is polished and it looks like the 'space' between the legs could be a ground out polished pontil.  Sort of 'Scandi' looking but that is purely a guess.  Measures about 17 cms long x 7.5 cms wide x 10 cms high at the highest point and weighs 700 gms.  Could be a piece from China, I have absolutely no idea and would appreciate any input.  Anyone any thoughts.  Thanks

If it were clear instead of green I would immediately suggest Vannes.  However they seem to be all clearly marked so I doubt they made it.  Nice item.

makes me think of a pipe rest  -  we've had them before, with similar large ish bowl shaped cavities...........   I have a couple in the shape of elephants  -  bit of a guess really, but certainly a possibility.
