By the way, the finial on the lid of yours is not a helmet, it is a "shako." Shakos were widely worn as military uniform hats up until around the first world war, and since then they have still been used to to today but less commonly than in earlier times. I do not know the age of your drum but it could be either during the time when shakos were commonly worn by militaries or it could be afterwards to evoke an image of the old days when drums were commonly used by militaries for commanders to signal their troops during a battle.
